Be a great parent
Families are where children first learn about relationships
Becoming a parent or a step-parent is the ultimate responsibility. When talking to parents I encounter a range of emotions that describe the rewarding and challenging role of parenting. If you are a parent or a step-parent you may be familiar with a few of these:-
-
Unconditional love
- Pride
- Satisfaction
- Reward
- Purpose
- Nurture
- Nourish
- Flourish
- Challenge
- Commitment
- Fulfilment
And how about some of these:-
- Guilt
- Fear
- Anger
- Need for personal freedom
- Lack of control
- Tiredness
- Anxiety
- Stress
Being a parent or step-parent is a journey and presents all of these emotions at some time or other, and probably a few more! Whilst the parent role is rewarding, at certain times in our life, the challenges can outweigh the rewards. During these times, the relationship can become unbalanced.
When a parent feels out of control, this can encourage negative emotions of guilt and anger within the parent. These negative emotions then impact the relationship between adult and child(ren) further, creating a cycle of bad feelings, resulting in bad behaviour (and not always just from the child!) and ultimately guilt, anger and recrimination within the parent. Once locked in this cycle, without support, it is difficult to break the pattern.

Help for Lone Parents
NJ Coaching recognises that the lone parent
is a very special role. Lone parents are doing
the work of two people every day, and that is
before they have to find a way of earning a
living.
|
Being a parent is a very demanding job.
Sometimes lone parents have differing goals to those families with two parents. At times, it can be a struggle, and for the lone parent particularly, finding support can be difficult.
Recognising the need for help is the first step.
Working with a coach can help lone parents to rediscover the joys of
parenting, when sometimes it seems as if it is all too much.

How can coaching help parents?
The vital role of a parent coach is unique. A parent coach will not give you solutions to your parental issues. Contrary to some of the more recent reality TV shows, the parent coach is not a guru or a super-parent, and is certainly not the expert in your family life.
A parent coach will not pass judgement on you, or tell you what to do.
A parent coach is accustomed to diversity, and recognises that what works well in her own family situation, may not work so well for you, and therefore will not offer you advice or put you down.
So why have a parent coach then?
A parent coach, I recognise that YOU are the expert in your family life. I will listen to the issues you are facing as a parent, and will support you in a constructive way to help YOU to find the solutions. I will challenge you and your behaviour, to identify the impact on your relationships with those closest to you.
I will help you to find a positive strategy to make change, to identify and celebrate what is working for you, and to work on what is not working so well.
Together we work as a team to focus on and prioritise what is important in your family life, and ultimately to empower you to make any changes or decisions that you feel are necessary.
I will encourage you every step of the way to help you to create fulfilment, harmony and balance in your family life, and to enjoy the enriching experience of being a parent.
" I feel so much better than I did over these issues. It is so much clearer to me, where I am going, and I feel confident to carry on meeting my goals
